NASA Launches GPM Core Observatory

On February 27, 2014, at 1:37 PM EST, NASA launched the GPM Core Observatory from Tanegashima Space Center in Japan. The Core satellite will help researchers from around the world unify precipitation measurements obtained via research and from other satellites.

Iowa Flood Center & NASA GPM

Last spring, the Iowa Flood Center hosted NASA GPM’s Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) ground validation campaign in eastern Iowa. During the months of May and June 2013, NASA researchers and researchers from across the country descended to Iowa with instrumentation to collect high quality rainfall data. The wet spring last year provided a wealth of data for researchers and NASA in preparation for the GPM Core Observatory satellite launch.
