Presentation from John Dorman, Assistant State Emergency Management Director for Risk Management

You are invited to attend a featured presentation at 8:30 am on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the University Capitol Centre (UCC) in Iowa City. The Iowa Flood Center is hosting special guest presenter John Dorman, the assistant state emergency management director for risk management in North Carolina.

What: Mr. Dorman will discuss North Carolina’s past, present, and future progression with the lifecycle of flood risk management. His presentation will focus on the phases of North Carolina’s implementation and touch on the key data, modeling, technology, applications, and partnerships that have enabled North Carolina to advance and implement a database-derived, dynamic, digital display of flood hazard and risk information.

Why: Mr. Dorman’s leadership, expertise, and experience related to flooding and disaster response, preparedness, and recovery provide valuable information that can be applied to the state of Iowa.
Mr. Dorman is responsible for the design, acquisition, analysis, and dissemination of data, models, analysis, systems, and applications associated with all hazard and threat risk management. He has managed numerous national demonstrations and statewide initiatives, including: LiDAR-derived elevation data; high-resolution orthophotography; building footprints generation and digital floorplan display; a database-derived, digital display of flood risk; school risk and response management; sea-level rise impact; flood inundation mapping and alerts; and state emergency response application. Since 2014, Mr. Dorman has served as chair of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Technical Mapping Advisory Council (TMAC), and he is a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Risk, Resilience, and Extreme Events.
