I am involved in creating inundation models that combine conventional one-dimensional hydraulic modeling elements with a two-dimensional mesh. Combining these two model types allows for consideration of complex flood phenomena, like overtopping of bridges or flow in the floodplain. These detailed models are used to create “libraries” of inundation maps that communities can use to evaluate their flood risk.

I am also involved in making hydraulic models to delineate floodplains for Iowa’s statewide floodplain mapping project. The large scale and vast quantities of data involved with this project present interesting challenges, but once completed, the state of Iowa will have a much improved knowledge of flood risk.
