English River Watershed Meeting
May 7, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
The City of Kalona and the Iowa Flood Center are sponsoring an upcoming meeting to garner interest in establishing a Watershed Management Authority (WMA). Community leaders and professionals from the English River watershed area are invited to this important event to learn more about flood hazards and water quality issues affecting this region, and discuss ways they can be cooperatively addressed.
Watershed Management Authorities are interagency groups that can be established through 28E agreements. They assist with public education and establishing watershed management plans that are relevant and feasible in meeting the specific social, economic, and environmental needs of their region. Moreover, watershed authorities, because of their interagency nature, can levy critical federal funds needed for comprehensive improvements.
Participants will include county officials from Iowa, Johnson, Keokuk, Mahaska, Poweshiek, and Washington counties, city officials from Barnes City, Deep River, Grinnell, Guernsey, Kalona, Keswick, Kinross, Millersburg, Montezuma, North English, Parnell, Riverside, South English, and Wellman, as well as staff from area conservation, agricultural, and non-governmental organizations.
